Final Major Project
I am currently studying a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. My final Major project has been an entirely self lead project, based around censorship, an exploration of my own sexuality and finding my place as a female artist in a world viewed primairly through the "Male Gaze".
Lulu Lockhart
Lulu is very well known for her classical look which lends it's self to Fine Art (usually nude) style work. She has been an inspiration to me for a number of years and I was very excited at the opportunity to work with/alongside Lulu.
The photoshoot was arranged by HexPictures and was based around the idea of an Agent Provocateur advert, where there are often two models in lingerie in a very grande location. Unlike some two girl shoots, the implication was that we were friends, not lovers.
Although I really like the art-nude photo sets we did and find them to be surprisingly less sexually suggestive, I really liked the original photograph to this painting. I think it is a more true represetation of the way I view Lulu. The pose and expression are quite dreamy and I feel it also shows a comforting friendship, rather than a relationship. Up to this painting, most of my work had been nude figurative work, as I am keen on learning about anatomy and how to represent accurate propertions and tone within my work. I really enjoyed creating something a bit different in this image and found the lingerie to be a very interesting challenge!

Painting

I started by drawing the outline in pencil and then paint. I chose my background colours and worked up to the lines with a brush.
I then used a pallet knife to create a more abstract background. I like the overall feel and colours, it is much more gestural than previous works.
For the bed, I used a smaller pallet knife and plan to use a "dirty glaze" to push it further into the background once dry. I used long gestural brush strokes for the bed frame.
I really struggled with the face as I've never painted one before! The nose shape was very hard, along with putting the lips in the right place.
For the skin tones I used a wide, flat brush to apply paint thickly. This was similar to how I painted the image of me & Camilla, but less refined. I am pleased with the colours! I like the smoother contrast against the background!
For the stockings, I used a similar technique as the skin tones but with a smaller brush and darker colours.
I really love this shoe! It actually looks like a shoe, the highlights really help to give it shape.
I started in a similar way to the stockings but used a very fine brush to add detail on top of the wet colour.
I feel quite proud of the lace and the use of different patterns on each person
Lulu left a reference for me on a photography/model networking site following our photo shoot (quoted from Purpleport.com):
“Had a great time shooting with Miss Rose a few weeks ago! She is extremely friendly and easy to work with, very chatty and full of fun and interesting conversation!
Miss Rose is extremely good at posing both by herself and with another model. She is also extremely creative and very in tune with what the photographer wants from their images, she listens responds and contributes incredibly well during a shoot and is a real asset to the entire creative process! She also poses very well and beautifully with other models, she makes you feel very comfortable and as a result the best images can be had!
It was wonderful meeting and working with Miss Rose, she is a really lovely person and a very talented model, would recommend her to any photographer or model who is posing with her alike!”
