Final Major Project
From 2015-2016 I am studied a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. My final Major project was an entirely self lead project, based around censorship, an exploration of my own sexuality and finding my place as a female artist in a world viewed primarily through the "Male Gaze".
Artist Statement
FRIENDS AND OTHER LOVERS
Friends and other lovers is collection of works by by Miss Rose. This body of work is an exploration into the dynamics she has with various women in her life; from strangers and people she finds inspiring, through to friends and even lovers.
Many depictions of women within artwork have been created by men and have an inherently sexual viewpoint; this is often referred to as the “Male Gaze”. As a female artist, Rose has studied and experimented with various media and techniques to find her own way of producing artwork that she believes to show a feminine perspective, from delicate brush strokes through to hand embroidery and stich work.
Along with the connection between artist and sitter, Rose explores the relationship between artist and viewer. By examining themes of censorship the connections other artists depict in their work, Rose asks: “Does the sexuality of the artist influence the way their artwork is viewed?”
