Final Major Project
I am currently studying a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. My final Major project has been an entirely self lead project, based around censorship, an exploration of my own sexuality and finding my place as a female artist in a world viewed primairly through the "Male Gaze".
Scarlett Fox
I booked a professional model, Scarlett Fox, along with hiring out a photography studio (“The Pit” in Nottingham) for a full day. I have seen Scarlett’s work and wanted to work with her for a long time. She is the first professional model I have photographed and really made me realise the difference between amateur and professional models!
Scarlett’s communications before the shoot were fantastic, I was able to explain my project to her which she was very excited to be a part of. During the day she was very easy to talk to and we almost instantly struck up a friendship. Every idea/concept I gave to Scarlett she fulfilled with ease, putting emotion and energy into every shot! I was amazed by the fluidity of her posing and the range of styles covered even in just a single set.
Not only did I get the opportunity to photograph Scarlett, but we also modelled together for some "duo" style images, taken by my partner also for this project (lighting set ups and ideas were directed by me). Scarlet was so easy (and fun) to work with and we got some fantastic shots! She was versatile and it felt like I had worked with Scarlett several times before despite this being the first time we met, she took any direction from the photographer well but was also able to flow independently and contribute her own ideas. It was very easy to pose myself with/around Scarlett and I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Scarlett has a very classical figure, which made her ideal for experimenting with “art-nude” style poses. I think I see Scarlett, as being an ideal representation of my "feminine ideal" through her delicate, graceful femininity combined with strength and confidence in her own body.

Final Painting

Print work / experiments:
First I drew out the image and went over the pencil lines in a weak yellow Ochre. I then began the background around the edge of the figures.
I decided to paint the background first so I could get a clear, definite line around the edge of the skin tones. I think the background here is too light and needs darkening but I like the mix of colours.
I started by blocking out the darkest areas, then working on the skin tones from left to right of the image. I really like how this hand turned out but I do need practice with anatomical drawings.
I am quite pleased with Scarlett's face! Most of the skin tones are completed on Scarlett, her skin is a much more pink colour than mine so I am trying to show that seperation in the choice of my colour pallet.
Here I have the anatomy of the face completely wrong! I used turpentine and a clean cloth / brush to remove as much paint as possible, eyes/nose shape.
Face re-worked. I printed a large picture of the face and experimented with pencil sketches. I think the shape is much better here! I also started working on the lingerie which I like so far.
Lingerie, skin tones and base hair tones finished here. I have also darkened the background to the right which I think looks better and less distracting.
The face is a lot better here, I've also re-worked the hands
Finished Image, highlights and darker tones have been added to Scarlett's hair. I have also glazed the whole image.
Scarlett left a reference for me on a photography/model networking site following our photo shoot (quoted from Purpleport.com):
“I had the truly wonderful pleasure of shooting with Miss_Rose last week at The Pit, what a divinely mad yet talented woman she is!
Miss_Rose is also an artist and a model, and has taken to photography for her art work to paint, sketch, and even sew the image, besides primarily taking the shot to turn it into something else, her photography is simply stunning, she knows her camera, she knows her lights, and she knows what she wants to achieve, and I guarantee you will have fun whilst shooting!
She arrived early to pick me up from the train station, and she gave me time to relax and unwind from the journey once we got to “The Pit Studio”, we talked through her ideas making sure to get everything she needed for her project. There isn't any sitting on the fence with Miss_Rose, she wanted to get some innocent ballet shots and art nude ones, and then move on to some more erotic work with art nudes and lingerie, and we sure did get them, I've already seen a few shots from the shoot and I'm so blown away, the lighting, the details, her direction just all meld into one and we created some fabulous work.
After working with her as the photographer she switched rolls in to model mode, what a stunning and mad creature she is!”
We started off with some art nudes throwing poses close to each other, then worked on some slightly more intimate nudes, and finishing up with lingerie and heels.
Miss_Rose is just so easy to work with, she's giggly, chatty, intellectual, fun, and professional, she's also a fantastic dancer which helps her create these beautifully graceful shots.”
